Two teams with undefeated regular season records were vying for Jimmy Byrne's commitment.
On Saturday, the junior offensive lineman from St. Ignatius High in Cleveland choose Notre Dame over Ohio State. Byrne announced his commitment on Twitter.
"Just got off the phone with Coach Kelly. Committed to the University of Notre Dame! ," he tweeted.
The 6-foot-4, 275-pound Byrne favored the Irish over the in-state Buckeyes, and also reported offers from Michigan State, West Virginia, Illinois and Indiana.
Byrne ranks as the No. 16 offensive guard in the 2014 class according to 247Sports.com. He's also listed as a four-star offensive tackle on Rivals.com 2014 Watch List of 250 players.
Byrne becomes the fourth verbal commitment to the Irish in the 2014 class, joining linebacker Greer Martini, wide receiver Justin Brent and defensive lineman Jay Hayes.
The 2013 class didn't pick up its fourth commitment until March 2012.
